Definition: What is the GED?

The Tests of General Educational Development (GED) provides a universally recognized alternative to a traditional high school diploma. The GED testing program began in 1942 and is now available in every state and U.S. territories and Canadian provinces. The American Council on Education in Washington, D.C., which governs the GED program, reports that each year the United States, approximately one out of every seven high school diplomas is based on results from the GED Tests.

What does it take to pass the GED, and is it difficult?

To assure that a GED credential stands for quality, the GED Tests are based on graduating high school seniors' abilities. GED passing scores are based on what two-thirds of graduates achieved. In another words, you will be tested at a twelfth grade level. Therefore difficulty level will depend on the grade level you are currently at and the amount of knowledge you will need to get to the twelfth grade level.

The GED is graded on two levels: passing each individual test and meeting the combined average for all five tests. In Michigan you must have a 410 on each individual test PLUS all five-test scores must add up to a total of 2250.

What if someone does not pass the tests?

Persons who do not pass the test on the first try will be notified and can retest two other times (a total of three attempts in one calendar year). Only the highest passing score will be recorded.

Where and when is the GED offered?

We have two main testing locations: ETC Midland and Downtown Saginaw GED Testing Center. GED testing is usually offered at least every month in both locations. The testing schedule in always posted in our GED offices or by calling 989-631-5202 Ext. 209 or 1-800-3U-LEARN.

What is the cost of the test?

• If a student enrolls in GED Preparation, the total cost for classes and testing is $50.00
• For students enrolled in GED Preparation, there is a $25.00 registration fee and upon completion of preparation, a student only has to pay $25.00 for the complete test or $5.00 for each section.
• Although a student who wishes to skip the above steps can pay a total of $130 for the complete test or $30 per “section” of the GED.
